The stability of the energy system depends on the supply of energy and the capacity to store it. Solutions in this area include the manufacturing of new types of batteries, renewable energy storage, and new operating models. Lithium-ion batteries are being replaced by zinc-air, sodium-sulfur, and aluminum-ion batteries. Battery energy storage systems and advanced thermal energy storage are becoming widespread. Distributed systems, on the other hand, provide the possibility to produce energy on-site and store it with the optional sale of the surplus to the grid.
